Combustion

Single-Stage Furnace
100% on, 100% off
Runs at one fixed output — 100% capacity whenever it turns on. It's the simplest and least expensive option but tends to cycle on and off more, which can cause temperature swings.

Two-Stage (Dual-Stage) Furnace
Low + high output
Has two levels of heat output, usually around 60–70% on low and 100% on high. It runs on the lower stage most of the time for better comfort, quieter operation, and improved efficiency.

Variable-Speed Furnace
Continuous modulation
Uses a modulating gas valve and variable-speed ECM blower to precisely adjust heat output and airflow. It can run at many different levels instead of just one or two, providing the most consistent temperatures, best humidity control, and highest efficiency.
