What Is an Air Conditioner?
A central air conditioner cools your home by removing heat and humidity from the indoor air and transferring that heat outside.
Warm air moves across the indoor evaporator coil, where refrigerant absorbs the heat. The cooled air is then circulated back through the ductwork.
Moisture in the air also condenses on the coil — which is why air conditioners reduce humidity, keeping your home comfortable even on the most humid days.

The Refrigeration Cycle
4 StagesCompressor
Pumps refrigerant; raises pressure & temperature.
Condenser
Outdoor coil — releases heat to the outside air.
Evaporator
Indoor coil — absorbs heat from your home’s air.
Expansion Valve
Drops pressure; refrigerant cools rapidly.
Refrigerant moves through a closed loop in four stages. The compressor pressurizes it, the condenser releases the heat outside, the expansion valve drops the pressure, and the evaporator absorbs heat from your home’s air — then it repeats.
Efficiency Guide
Understanding SEER Ratings
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures how efficiently an air conditioner operates over an entire cooling season. Higher SEER numbers mean the system produces the same cooling while using less electricity.
13–14 SEER
Minimum Efficiency
Older systems and entry-level replacements. Meets minimum federal standards.
15–16 SEER
Standard Modern Efficiency
A solid balance of performance and cost. The most popular choice for new installations.
17–18 SEER
High Efficiency
Noticeably lower energy bills with advanced compressor technology.
20+ SEER
Premium Variable-Speed
Top-tier efficiency with whisper-quiet operation and precise temperature control.
